eToro is the go-to platform for social and copy trading, trading off slightly higher FX costs for simplicity and community features.
Our verdict on eToro
eToro, founded in 2007, is best known for social and copy trading: you can see what other investors are doing and automatically copy their portfolios. UK clients are served by eToro (UK) Ltd, which is authorised by the FCA (FRN 583263).
eToro prices CFDs as a percentage of the trade rather than in pips: EUR/USD costs 0.005% per trade, which works out at around 0.57 pips at today's exchange rate. UK clients can hold a GBP account, and withdrawals from it are free, but trading US assets from GBP or withdrawing from a USD account adds conversion costs or a US$5 fee. There are no account, management or inactivity fees, and no overnight or custody fees on unleveraged shares.
For beginners who want to invest and trade in one friendly app, including shares, ETFs, crypto and an ISA, eToro is hard to beat. Active forex traders will find it limited, though: there is no MetaTrader, no spread betting and far fewer advanced tools than at specialist brokers.
