Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged forex are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly. Most retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. Consider whether you can afford to take that risk.

Our verdict on Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is one of the largest brokers in the world. Its founder and chairman, Thomas Peterffy, started the business 49 years ago; the group now has equity capital of US$22.3 billion and more than 5 million client accounts. UK clients are served by Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited, which is authorised by the FCA (FRN 208159).

For forex, IBKR works differently from spread-betting brokers: you trade close to interbank prices and pay a separate commission of 0.20 basis points of the trade value (minimum US$2 per order) at the standard tier. For larger trades that is extremely cheap; for very small trades the US$2 minimum makes it less attractive. There is no minimum deposit and no inactivity fee.

Where IBKR really stands out is breadth: access to 170 market centres, 29 currencies, shares, ETFs, options, futures, bonds and funds, plus ISA accounts for UK investors. The flip side is complexity. Trader Workstation is powerful but has a steep learning curve, and IBKR does not offer spread betting.
